Update on the WSLPP Project

Greenup continues to make progress on their portion of the West Shore Lake Pontchartrain Project (WSLPP), awarded to them in January 2020. Greenup’s primary operations on the site have been excavating, processing, and stockpiling clay in two areas within the Bonnet Carre Spillway.

Construction Manager Steven Keen reported that despite “rain…hampering clay hauling and stockpiling,” approximately 10,000 cubic yards of clay have been moved to Stockpile Area 1. At the same time, Greenup has been extending the hauling road for the stockpile so that it can better reach future levee sites: “This consists of clearing vegetation,” Keen explained, “leveling the existing ground surface, installing a geogrid material for enhanced stabilization, adding sand on top of the geogrid, spreading a geotextile fabric, and finally crushed limestone.” The access road renovation at the Stockpile location in LaPlace is estimated at 30% complete.

Weather setbacks at Stockpile 2 have had more impact because the pit and stockpile are located in the spillway. “We expect to restart hauling and stockpiling before the end of the month,” Keen remarked.

Greenup will have removed 1.5 million cubic yards of clay from the Spillway at the end of the project.

Construction Project Challenges and Solutions

Screen Shot 2020-08-17 at 10.48.05 AM.png

During the life of a construction project, there are many potential pitfalls. Project managers are responsible for keeping a site running smoothly, safely, within schedule, and on budget. Often this can prove challenging.

According to a study on construction productivity, 98% of construction projects come in over budget, and 77% suffer significant delays. The study cited a variety of factors that account for poor productivity and cost outcomes:

  • Unresolved issues stack up due to a lack of communication and accountability.

  • Inadequate communication, especially in reporting the progress of the project.

  • Poor organization when it comes to decision-making and procurement processes.

  • Insufficient management of long and short-term risks.

  • Not finding the right people to do the job.

At Greenup Industries, we take pride in our ability to keep our construction jobs moving forward past delays and budget issues. Here are some of the processes we have in place to ensure that we are prepared to face construction challenges:

Communication Is Key
Communication is an important tool in any profession, but it’s crucial when the delegation of duties is involved. Without clear and effective communicating, important tasks can slip through the cracks, and the team can remain unaware of an issue until it’s too late to rectify the situation.

Project managers need to enact clear guidelines. There should be communication that informs teams of any progress or obstacles at the end of each day. This way, you can solve problems proactively. If in-person meetings are not an option, zoom meetings are a great alternative.

A construction project can easily be delayed or run over budget if management does not set goals. Without clear goals, it’s challenging to get things done efficiently, and people can not be held accountable for their part in the project.

Performance management

A crucial aspect of project management is keeping everyone on task. There must be straightforward communication and defined tasks to perform. At Greenup Industries, we believe it is more effective to break down bigger, project-wide goals into smaller, daily targets for individuals to accomplish. When you keep people accountable through set processes, you can keep the whole project moving forward.

Risk Management

Project managers often put safeguards in place for long-term risk. However, short-term issues are sometimes left out. Short-term issues, such as unanticipated bad weather, can snowball quickly and start to have a tangible impact on the bottom line. Whether it’s subcontractors who turn out to be unreliable, or scheduling conflicts, minor issues can derail a project. It’s essential to have contingency plans and to build some wiggle room into scheduling.

At Greenup Industries, we make safety a priority. We have invested in training to ensure that our construction jobs run smoothly.

Key Personnel

Construction is a reputation-based industry. People like to tend to work with people they know and trust. When teams know how to work together, the work will be seamless and efficient. However, when there is a skills gap in the group, it may cause unnecessary delays.

At Greenup Industries, our variety of clients range from the industrial and commercial manufacturing industries to Federal and local municipalities and utilities. We can help you at any phase of your project, from idea to construction and startup.

Greenup Industries Fortifies Louisiana Levees and Increases Storm Protection in Time for 2021 Hurricane Season

Screen Shot 2021-05-11 at 10.02.55 AM.png

As work continues on the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) West Shore Lake Ponchartrain Levee stockpile projects, Greenup continues to hire locally as it anticipates completing one project by this summer.

Greenup Industries (“Greenup”) was awarded a portion of the West Shore Lake Pontchartrain Project (WSLPP) in January 2020, a major hurricane and storm damage risk reduction project benefitting a three-parish area in southern Louisiana. The company’s scope of work includes excavating, processing, and stockpiling clay material and other work within the Bonnet Carre Spillway.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reported that Greenup was awarded the portion of WSLPP (“Stockpile II) in January 2020. The $20,520,000 contract included excavating, processing, and stockpiling of 1.5 million cubic yards of clay from the Bonnet Carre Spillway to two stockpile sites. The Bonnet Carre Spillway has roughly 3.5 million cubic yards available, while the rest of the clay is to come from commercial sources.

Greenup was awarded the portion of WSLPP (“Stockpile II) in January 2020. The $20,520,000 contract included excavating, processing, and stockpiling of 1.5 million cubic yards of clay from the Bonnet Carre Spillway to two stockpile sites.

In November 2020, Greenup was awarded a 2nd Stockpile contract  for excavating, processing and stockpiling clay material at the Bonnet Carre Spillway (Stockpile I). The Stockpile I contract is currently valued at approximately $19,900,000, including modifications. The material will support the construction of approximately 17.5 miles of levee system that will provide 100-year level risk reduction to the area extending from the Bonnet Carre Spillway to Garyville, Louisiana.

The Stockpile II work was initially estimated for competition by January 22, 2021 however high river levels and an unusually active hurricane season in 2020 created some delays in the stockpiling process. According to Steve Keen, Greenup Industries’ construction manager, WSLPP, “Approximately 157,000 cubic yards have been stockpiled thus far. This represents 25 percent of the 500,000 cubic yards to be excavated and stockpiled,” he said. “We have been working on the stockpiling project for nearly a year. When you say dig clay and stockpile it, there’s much more to it than that,” Keen said. “In the Spillway itself, you have to clear through all of the shrubs and get them out of the way. Then there are usually several feet of sand on top. You have to move that before you can actually start digging the clay out.”  He added that the clay cannot be too wet or too dry when moving it and that workers achieve the optimized moisture level by chopping the clay up and letting the sun and wind harden it. The clay then is loaded into trucks and hauled down Airline Highway onto a newly constructed access road in the sugarcane fields, near the River Forest subdivision.

The access road into the field was part of the scope of the project. Greenup widened the road with asphalt and extend the access road to where the levee is going to be built. In addition, the company also built a new asphalt ramp at the back of the Spillway by the existing boat launch.

“These are two of the preliminary things that needed to be done before we can start hauling any clay out,” Keen said. “We started  that in late March to early April 2021.”  Greenup hired flag persons to make sure everyone is aware of the increased traffic and remained in communication with the St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office to ensure officers were on detail to keep the area safe. “The project will bring a significant number of trucks entering Airline from the East side of the Spillway and exiting into the stockpile area, and also coming out of the stockpile area heading back to the Spillway to get loaded again,” Keen said. Greenup is currently contracted to stockpile 1.5 million cubic yards. However, this could be extended by an extra 500,000 to equal 2 million cubic yards.

Greenup is adept at handling large-scale projects for the public good. From refurbished roads and bridges to industrial construction and maintenance, Louisiana-based Greenup Industries is behind countless projects across the Gulf South that point to the region’s growth and vibrancy. The company has expanded by leaps and bounds since its founding in 2012, becoming a leading construction contractor and provider of maintenance and third-party procurement services.  With operations in Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi and Alabama, Greenup Industries is poised for expansion into Florida soon, says founder and CEO Rodney Greenup, a New Orleans native who began his career as a mechanical engineer and project manager with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. “We’re continuing to grow and diversify,” says Greenup. “There’s a lot of growth potential and work to be done throughout the region.”

Greenup celebrates Women In Construction Week and Naiika Bass' promotion to Industrial Division Manager

construction-worker-using-tablet-pc-D9JABBB.jpg

According to statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor, women comprise only 10.3 percent of construction workers. Even less is the percentage of women on the front lines of a construction job site, approximately one for every 100 employees. Greenup, a provider of construction, maintenance, and third-party procurement services, recognizes Women In Construction week by celebrating the advancement of women in the industry and the promotion of Naiika Bass as its Industrial Division Manager.

Naiika Bass, Industrial Division Manager

Bass was introduced to the construction industry in 2007 by her Mom, who worked as a certified pipefitter. After graduating from South University with an Associate of Science degree in Criminal Justice, she pursued her Occupational Safety & Health degree from Columbia Southern University and her NCCER certification in Construction Site Safety Technician (CSST), Construction Site Safety Supervisor (CSSS), Field Safety, OSHA 30, and First Aid/C.P.R. For the next six years, she worked in the oil and gas industry as a safety professional. It was her responsibility to ensure each location was in compliance with safety rules and regulations. "When I first began working as a safety professional, it was evident that there was a lack of trust between the field workers and management. I embraced the challenge to change this culture. After developing relationships with the field workers, they soon realized I was looking after their best interests and that my main goal was to make sure they got home safely to their families," she said. In 2017, Bass joined Greenup as its Health and Safety Manager.

Greenup's CEO, Rodney Greenup, believes Bass provides a great example of how women can successfully advance to leadership positions within the construction field. "Naiika has shown her ability and initiative to address the challenges in her work. Because of her attention to detail and her tenacity in regards to following up and following through, we have earned numerous safety awards. We welcome the opportunity to promote her and trust that her career will continue to grow with us," he said.

For all the obstacles that women face in the construction field, from lack of training to gender bias, nearly one-third of companies promoted a woman to a senior position in 2018. In Bass' new role as Industrial Division Manager, her responsibility is to manage all of the Oil and Gas Industrial 3rd party vendors. "I am so grateful that Greenup gave me an opportunity to expand my career into other areas of the construction industry. I wear many hats with Greenup and I enjoy wearing all of them. I enjoy the work I do, and I especially enjoy the culture here at Greenup," she said.

As construction anticipates a rebound from the slowdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic, hiring more women and providing them with opportunities for advancement is an optimal way for a company to expand. A recent report found that construction firms with more women in executive roles experienced higher than above-average financial performance compared to those companies that did not. When 30 percent or more of executive-level positions were filled by women, those companies experienced a 48 percent likelihood of outperforming their less-diverse competitors.

"At Greenup, we believe in hiring more women as they enhance our diversity and contribute fresh perspectives," said Steve Keen, Construction Manager. "Naiika brings a 'can do' attitude to her work and it is an inspiration to those who have the pleasure of working with her. Two of her many strong points are her enthusiasm and dedication. Greenup is fortunate to have her on our team."

Adding future Opportunities to Succeed Based on Quality and Innovation

creative-idea-or-innovation-concept-CW9DBTG.jpg

At Greenup Industries, we pride ourselves in an unrelenting dedication to quality and innovation. These two markers of success are by-products of a company culture that re-invests time and financial resources into improving the character of our industry, team, and client base.

One of our strategies for success is recognizing that at the heart of innovation is our talented team. To get ideal results, we try to lead every new project with a play to passion. Workplace studies conducted in recent years have revealed almost 70% of employees in the United States do not associate positive feelings with their work. We understand that our work and company culture is the motor for a successful business. One of our priorities is to ensure that the simple principle of "satisfied and driven staff equals a quality product" is visible in our products and services.

In addition to stirring up innovation in our employees, Greenup Industries also conducts a proactive approach to consumer confidence. We value our client's opinions as to how to improve our services. By proactively engaging with our clients, we can increase efficiency by being one step ahead of solving any issues that would warrant future industry reforms or similar moves. One of the ways we do this is through our proprietary software, the Greenup Tracker, a multi-use platform designed to increase efficiency and capability for both our clients and vendors.

We prove that dedication to culture and character of quality leads to industry-wide recognition and overall success through these two approaches. We approach problem-solving with the attitude that while our accolades speak to quality, we must sustain that quality. Over the years, we have been the proud recipients of several awards, including the 2019 Emerging Growth Company Award from ACG, the 2018 Gold Medal Award from Shell/Norco, and the 2017 Specialities Services Award for Outstanding Safety Performance from the Gulf South Safety Council, to name a few. While this undoubtedly helps establish an air of quality and sound innovation, we are dedicated to continually increasing our quality level by investing resources in the company's culture and character. We think that's only fair before the opportunities to continue to do well in the future head our way.

Greenup Industries Participated in LED's Small Business Mentor Program

Picture1 copy 2.png

Rodney Greenup, of Greenup Industries, was proud to be included in the Louisiana Economic Development Mentor-Protégé Program For Small Businesses held on July 28-30, 2020. The partnerships that emerge from the program aim to help emerging small companies succeed in Louisiana's economy.

Several Louisiana businesses, big and small, have become textbook cases in a push to encourage growth and closely help integrate second-stage businesses into a mutually beneficial sharing of networking resources. In July, Louisiana Economic Development, in coordination with the Edward Lowe Foundation, founded The American Academy of Entrepreneurs to strengthen networking and communication within and outside second-stage businesses.

Second-stage businesses employ roughly 10 to 100 people. The Mentor-Protégé Program For Small Businesses’ goal is to help these companies build and retain an effective team, decide which strategy is best for long-lasting growth, and discover how to locate and zero in on targeted opportunities.

Via Zoom Meetings, the program paired second-stage businesses with other participating firms to create Mentor-Protégé relationships. The intensive, retreat-focused approach was designed to discover the value of companies' relationships and how they can be strengthened. Following the retreat, the company pairs will continue to hold monthly meetings to collaborate and focus on company objectives.

The LED staff understands that the assistance from programs such as these helps us better maintain quality at the intersection of opportunity and intervention. Continued dedication to quality through cooperation across the industry provides solutions and other positive benefits for the entire industry.

That means the majority believe there is room for improvement.

Without effective onboarding, it takes longer for workers to become profit centers for your business.

And if you don’t have the right process for onboarding, you will have:

·      Slower third party turnaround time, which impacts revenue opportunities

·      Improper third party vetting, leading to increased legal compliance risk

·      Compliance wastes time and resources, and cannot focus on higher

The Complexities of Instrumentation - What do Instrumentation Technicians Do?

petrochemical-oil-refinery-PTFK9EA.jpg

As Greenup Industries introduces instrumentation services to clients across the Gulf South, we are often asked questions about the job responsibilities of our instrumentation technicians. As experts in the industry, our trainees learn the ins and outs of the daily tasks on site.

Instrumentation Technicians are responsible for monitoring changes in the environment and atmosphere surrounding areas and buildings on-site. Using an assortment of instruments, instrumentation technicians record and report the changes they find. Greenup Industries hires Instrument Technicians that exhibit that they possess a complex understanding and responsibility of these tasks, especially in the oil and gas industry.

There is more to instrumentation than just understanding what tools to use and when. The responsibilities of an instrumentation technician include testing, calibration, installation, repair, and inspection. Completing maintenance on equipment, which includes checking meters, measurements and is also required, as well as control. Control requires that the technician manipulate measured variables through automated systems, such as temperature, pressure, and flow.

The responsibilities of an instrumentation technician are absolutely vital to process and production at an oil refinery. Troubleshooting and monitoring such complex processes onsite ensure that everything runs smoothly and everyone around is safe. This job is essential to each refinery's and petrochemical plants’ ongoing success. The day-to-day duties of an instrumentation technician's role are at the forefront of overall production.

If you are looking for a career in operations or maintenance, Greenup Industries will afford you the opportunity to advance your professional development in an industry that experiences groundbreaking projects every day.

To find out more about what Greenup Industries’ instrumentation services offered throughout the Gulf South Region, call us today at (225) 283-4843 or email us at info@greenupind.com.

Construction Safety - Post Covid 19

Greenup GC.jpg

Rodney Greenup, President, Greenup Industries

There is no way to predict the full impact of COVID-19 and how it will affect businesses across the U.S. However, it is safe to assume there will be substantial delays and cost implications. Many contractors may not be feeling the effects yet because they were considered “essential” during government work restrictions. But it is possible and likely that every business will be affected in some way eventually. As we navigate this uncharted territory, keeping these five points in mind may help you keep yourself, your employees and your company safe.

Safety first

The first step is to ensure your business takes proper precautions to protect employees and their families. Although most construction work cannot be done remotely or correctly performed with social distancing, steps can be taken to minimize the spread of COVID-19.

Provide your teams with the proper PPE and training to support better hygiene and reduce the possibility of future virus transmissions from asymptomatic employees or unknown carriers.

Consider staggering shifts and sequencing work areas to avoid unnecessary groupings of workers. Utilize video teleconferences for your toolbox talks and safety meetings. Most importantly, work diligently to ensure that, despite the change in structure, safety measures remain robust, including proper supervision, safety inspections and accountability.

Prevention

Hygiene, situational awareness and due diligence are operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They should be embedded in all your processes, encouraged and rewarded. Lead from the top down, empowering your teams to do what’s right and supporting proper habits on the ground.

Call a meeting of minds

Bring your staff together virtually to share their best thoughts, ideas and practices regarding hygiene and safety. Focus on prevention and what is working. If you allow your teams to report on unsafe practices without fear of repercussions, you will surely prevent more injuries, illnesses and disruptions to your workflow.

Touchless

Provide safer jobsites for your workers by implementing touchless registration, virtual orientations, virtual training and automated health checklists.

This moment in history should be a catalyst for our industry; it’s the beginning of  a long-term shift in the way we work. Companies that evolve their processes instead of merely adjusting and implementing minor changes will emerge as the leaders of our industry. Embrace change, analyze your processes, find areas for improvement and then search for the best possible solutions. Safety and good hygiene are not to be negotiated; they should instead lay the foundation of our future success.

Streamline processes with Greenup Tracker

Greenup light.PNG

For 30 years, Greenup Industries has provided professional and specialized services and procurement support to a diverse clientele, addressing the needs of the oil and gas and telecommunication industries as well as government agencies. Now, with the release of Greenup Tracker, its proprietary software that allows for a more streamlined process, Greenup Industries seeks to further solidify its reputation as a trusted solutions provider.

"We developed Greenup Tracker as a two-pronged solution," explained CEO Rodney Greenup. "For our clients, we wanted to reduce the amount of time spent administering contracts, tracking vendors, and entering data manually from multiple monitoring systems. For our vendors, we wanted to standardize and ease the process for getting them onboard, vetted, and paid. The system is a win-win for everyone involved."

During the past five years, Greenup Industries' strategy has been to identify opportunities to retrofit and change systems, so they work more efficiently.

"We first realized that one of the most impactful ways to cut costs in facilities management is to have our vendors be a part of the Greenup team," Greenup said. "Now we have thousands of vendors and can offer our clients so much more: safe onboarding, quality control, and oversight, and the assumption of liability and indemnity, to name a few."

Quality and accountability

At Greenup Industries, all vendors are managed in the same consistent manner. Each is vetted and must be insured and capable of performing quality work. Before onboarding, vendors must sign an indemnity agreement, submit to drug testing, and have a clean safety record (no safety incidents within the past 12-36 months). To ensure accountability and quality assurance, a Greenup representative escorts the vendor to the worksite, and any on-site trainings.

Ease of process

Greenup Tracker provides vendors with an efficient system and reliable terms for payment.

"Through Greenup Tracker, you can easily add a work order, check on the progress of any job and monitor your payment status with ease," Greenup said. "As a preferred vendor, you can gain access to multiple job sites and immediately see the impact of growing your business."

Greenup Industries is one of the largest third-party-services trading houses in the U.S. and has offices established throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Currently, Greenup is looking to expand to Florida and in the Mississippi Valley toward Missouri.

"As we grow, we stay mindful of our goal to provide the finest-quality services to our clients, to continually improve performance, and to add value to whatever services we provide," Greenup stated.

At Greenup Industries safety is our middle name

female-safety-inspector-with-digital-tablet-at-con-RXLPVGA.jpg

The safety regulations at any refinery are extremely important and directly correlated to a staff's level of danger. Throughout the Gulf South, there are a large number of refineries, meaning there are thousands of workers who are at risk of injury for several hours a day. It is our job to make sure our people are safe.

Greenup Industries puts safety at the forefront of every job.

There are inherent risks present in the industrial industry that must not be overlooked. It takes a detail-oriented, meticulous team to provide the proper environment for those working in the refining industry, which is why you don't often hear of major accidents or disasters on sites. Extensive procedures are conducted to manage potential risks all the while keeping operations running smoothly for all workers and the communities that surround these sites.

Because of the high safety standards, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports:

  • Refining is one of the safest industrial activities in the US, with fewer worker injuries than sectors such as education, retail sales, and financial services

  • The rate of non-fatal injuries among U.S. refinery workers declined by 36% between 2003 and 2011

  • Refiners operate under extensive self-imposed safety measures designed to provide maximum protection to our communities,

Greenup Industries has been recognized for its efforts to keep safety standards a top priority in all of our work and this would not be possible without our team of experts working in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and California. The oil and gas industry could be so much more dangerous, but with crews like ours, negative statistics are quickly becoming a thing of the past. Facilities Maintenance - Commercial Lawn care makes the First Impression

modern-office-buildings-at-night-PKC5TWQ.jpg

Throughout the South, winter often means we don’t have to focus much energy on lawn care. When considering your commercial business, first impressions are too important, so just because the freezing temperatures we’ve recently had have given us an excuse to focus our efforts on the inside, doesn’t mean we should start planning for the spring. Remember, the first thing clients and customers see when they arrive at your business is the exterior.

Here are 4 Key Benefits of Lawn Care Planning

Appearance
The way clients and visitors perceive your business can make or break your success. An office/building with properly maintained landscaping ensures positive first impressions to clients and their networks. Those who see a well-maintained exterior will view your business as professional, fostering a sense of trust. Regardless of what services or products your company offers, if people see you take pride in the appearance of your business, they will associate your brand with high quality.

Safety
As always, safety is at the top of our minds at Greenup Industries. When landscaping is unkempt, this poses a potential danger to those going through your doors. Taking care of your lawn and landscaping means taking care of your staff, clients, and potential customers.

Save Money
When you work with a lawn and landscaping business, like Greenup Specialty Services, you’ll get a professional opinion on what your business needs. Working with professionals to establish a budget and recurring maintenance allows you to save money long term. Work with Greenup Specialty Services to determine which types of plants, trees, and other foliage work best in your climate and terrain to avoid having to replace them later. Greenup Specialty Services can discuss and work with you on how to implement a design that works best for your business.

Establish a Landscape Management Plan
There are plenty of benefits to establishing a landscape management plan. In addition to the aforementioned, a plan establishes a routine for commercial landscape maintenance care. This will help you and the property owners prepare for the upcoming seasons and anticipate what type of work needs to be done to keep the outside neat and manicured. A wonderful benefit to having a plan is that you can work with the lawn care service providers to adapt and better the landscaping over time, allowing for strategic cultivation that increases property value.

At Greenup Industries, we are constantly reiterating to our clients the importance of safety on the job. Refinery work can be very high risk and that is why we put our employees through rigorous training before we send them out to begin work on-site. The safety and health of our employees is always at the forefront of what we do at Greenup Industries.

Key practices to ensure our team is always safe

In compliance with federal and state safety regulations, the refineries we partner with operate under strict safety measures. These safety measures are in addition to those already imposed by federal and local regulations. This allows for the most effective production and the safest environment for our team.

Some of the measures taken include:

·       Extensive safety training of employees and contractors

·       Reliable use of proper site equipment

·       Regular practice of safety and emergency procedures

·       Constant communication with staff and partners to ensure all production processes are aligned

·       Weekly inspections and maintenance repairs to equipment and machinery

·       Plan of action in response to safety concerns or hazards identified by Greenup Industries team on-site

While we continue to push these strict safety practices and maximize our commitment to keeping our staff out of harm’s way, our goal is to build trust with our most important partners.
